The Si hatchback is more fun, though not as much as other sporty coupes.

The engines in the GX, HX and EX are equipped with Honda's VTEC variable valve-timing system. VTEC allows both the GX and EX to make 127 horsepower. The miserly HX manages only 117 hp, but the reward is an EPA mileage estimate of 36/44 mpg city/highway. The HX and GX can be equipped with a continuously variable transmission and all of these engines meet ultra-low emission vehicle (ULEV) standards. Later in 2002, Honda is set to offer a gasoline/electric hybrid Civic showcasing technology developed for the Honda Insight.

If it's power you are looking for, the Civic Si hatchback should suit you. The Si comes with the 160-hp 2.0-liter engine also found in the Acura RSX. The shifter for the close-ratio five-speed manual transmission is mounted rally-style on the center dashboard. Other features include standard rear disc brakes, a sport-tuned suspension, sport seats and special gauges.

Unfortunately, the hatchback model got the axe and the zippy Si Coupe disappeared in the process, leaving two- and four-door models available in a wide variety of trim levels. Like last year, base models are known as DX, and include a tilt steering wheel and an AM/FM four-speaker stereo, among other items. Mid-level LX comes with air conditioning (includes a micron air filter), power windows and locks, cruise control and a cassette deck. Top-of-the-line EX receives antilock brakes, a moonroof, 15-inch wheels, a CD player and a more powerful VTEC engine. If fuel economy is a priority, get the HX Coupe, available with an optional continuously variable transmission (CVT) and lightweight alloy wheels. Got an Ed Begley Jr. complex? Try the CVT-equipped GX Sedan, which runs on natural gas and meets super ultra low emission vehicle (SULEV) standards. GX can be equipped with lightweight alloy wheels and ABS.

Strict budgets demand a look at the CX, while sedans are aimed more at the creature comfort side of the scale. Style-conscious buyers will go for the svelte coupe, or the suave EX sedan. Whatever your needs, Honda offers a Civic that will meet them - that is, unless your needs include towing trailers or carrying a family of five.

At this point I am passing my 1998 Civic with 218k miles to my younger sibling since I bought a newer Japanese car. This car has been really good to us. We owned a '96 LX sedan, but that was totaled by a woman, so we bought a '97 LX sedan, which was also totaled by a woman some years later. That brings us to our current Civic, a '98 DX, I've put about 80k on it. All are 5-speeds and I can tell you that all three have basically driven identically. If you're looking for a really cheap car that gets decent mileage, you can get one of these for next to nothing and you probably won't regret it at all. It's a great car, and very reliable (assuming you avoid the auto tranny...it's a Honda).

This thing, in its prime, regularly cranked out 40 MPG around town, on the highway...wherever. Now the engine is a little worn out, but I still rarely see a single tank below 35 MPG. These cars are a lot of fun to drive around town. The acceleration is decent if you really rev it up, although still pitiful under normal circumstances. The clutch is extremely light and barely takes any effort to push in and operate compared to every other car I've ever driven. Transmission is buttery-smooth even at 218k. The HVAC controls are great. You can run the defrost with recirc on and A/C off, unlike every other car ever made. Drives great in the snow, too. You really have great control.

This car would not be my first choice for a long road trip at any reasonable speed. At 75 MPH, the engine is screaming along at 3500+ RPM. The noise can be annoying at times (granted I've been in noisier cars that were 7 years newer). It also isn't very stable in windy conditions and gets knocked around like the lightweight car it is.

What is the consumer reviews about 1995 Honda Civic according to carsurvey? .The Honda Civic CX has treated me very well. I would describe this car as high value for your money as it requires very little maintenance and is very dependable. This car is perfect for daily commuting as it is easy to drive and comfortable on short trips.

My favorite features of this car is its performance during the winter. The CX starts every day on cold Canadian winters. I don't even have to plug in the block heater until at least -20 C. There have been a few winters where the temp has dipped below -30 C and the car still starts.

Additionally, with some high quality studless tires the CX handles superbly on icy and snowy roads. You can crank on the steering wheel and the cars will turn like it were on rails. The only problems with winter driving that have occurred is getting stuck in snow drifts due to low ground clearance.

Although the CX is an subcompact economy car there are still some features I am disappointed with. For starters the CX doesn't come properly equipped. My 5 speed manual doesn't have a tachometer. Also, there is now power steering or ABS. If this car was any heavier it wouldn't be operable due to steering issues at low speeds. Other features have been omitted by Honda including no passenger side mirror, no wiper for the hatch window, no clock, poor interior lighting. I guess you can purchase these as options; however aren't the above features necessities?

Overall, the Civic  CX is a great car. With over 265,000 km I can still achieve over 550 km on a 35 litre tank of fuel. The engine and transmission are running very smooth for their age. I am never hesitant to take this car on road trips in the fear of a break down. If you can find a used '95 Civic I would strongly suggest to purchase.
